PUBLIC HOUSING

Building power with tenants

The Southlawn Tenant Association is a group of tenants who live in a diverse, market-rate public housing community. Through door-to-door conversations, Common Ground built a strong, growing team of over 20 neighbors banding together to make a change.

Organized in the spring of 2022, the group has already made important strides to make the neighborhood and surrounding streets safer for residents. Working to get several speedbumps, stop signs and crosswalks, the Southlawn Tenant Association petitioned Alderman Scott Spiker and the Department of Public Works. As these efforts progress, the team is also passionate about seeing maintenance complaints of the residents addressed, as well as creating activities for kids and providing meals for seniors.

“In a neighborhood as diverse as Southlawn, there can be challenges, doubts, even antagonism,” says Common Ground Organizer Kevin Solomon. “But when we pull together through Common Ground to make our neighborhood better, it’s powerful. It’s beautiful.”
