GOTV 2020

Milwaukee had an oversized role to play in deciding the 2020 election, so nothing was more important to us than making sure everyone who wanted to vote was able to.

Because of COVID-19, the need for active citizen involvement to register voters, help them request absentee ballots and cast their votes was critical. New voter registration was down, many people were voting in new or unfamiliar ways and needed help getting accurate information about the requirements and options for voting.

Common Ground's non-partisan, Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaign helped bring voters to the polls in a number of ways.

  • We had a goal of turning out over 15,000 people to vote in the 2020 presidential election.  These are people we knew through our member institutions and in our social networks, as well as people we met through phone calls and door-to-door canvassing around our institutions.

  • We worked with the Milwaukee Election Commission to help voters whose absentee ballots were rejected because of a missing signature as well as voters who need a witness signature on their absentee ballot.

  • We collected the names and addresses of everyone we turn out to vote so that we can match them to the voting record and make sure that every vote was counted.

  • On Election Day Common Ground Poll Protectors were stationed at seven polling sites, assuring that people we came to vote, got to vote.

  • We called and texted voters to remind and assist them in getting to the polls.

  • We facilitated transportation for those who could not get to the polls without it.

  • We organized an effort to get last-minute ballots to Central Count.

Through our Get Out the Vote, we will continue to assure that voters in upcoming elections have the means and information they need to participate in the democratic process.
