WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC FIELD

Transforming a dangerous, dilapidated, outdated athletic field into a neighborhood jewel.

the problem

The Washington High School athletic field is not just central to the lives of students and student athletes. It’s an important community resource and gathering place. But it had been neglected for a very long time.

WHAT WE’VE DONE

Common Ground has raised $830,300 for this catalytic project and partnered with MPS and MPS Foundation for a $2.5 million investment in an artificial turf field, a rubberized 400-meter track and basketball half-courts.

WHS students and their Sherman Park neighbors now have a place to meet, compete, exercise, and play.
  • State-of-the-art athletic field, track, and basketball courts
  • Washington High School teams that use the track and field now have more students participating and more victories.
  • Milwaukee Recreation also heavily uses the field for youth sports. On warm Saturdays the field is filled with younger children playing soccer.
  • Brand new athletic field
